I’m getting fed up with this whole “feminism as an identity” thing. Time for “feminism as an action.”

So instead of asking “can a feminist do x?” ask “is doing x a feminist action!”

Can a feminist take her husband’s last name? Mu. Null. Question un-valid, please un-ask question.

Is taking your husband’s last name a feminist action? No it isn’t. It doesn’t challenge the patriarchy in anyway, it is the status quo thing to do, it is what is expected of women, and it carries a lot of historical baggage about ownership and shit like that.

But that’s okay, your life choices don’t have to be 100% dictated by your politics unless you want them to. And it’s okay to really want to take his name while recognizing that you also want to do the feminist thing and keep your own, and it’s okay to feel conflicted and have a hard time making the choice. But no more of this enabling “as long as I made the choice myself it is a feminist choice” -bullshit. Own your choices, even the ones that aren’t informed by your feminist politics. You are still a human being and people do shit that contradicts their politics and even interests all the time. Just stop pretending that everything you do is feminist because you are a feminist, that’s not how it works.

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:

The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:

And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:

So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:

But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

Anna Thomas' Green Soup Recipe on Food52

For kicking off the new year in a wholesome way / battling a cold / battling the cold / having just watched a bunch of Victorian polar explorers succumb to malnutrition, it’s: Green Soup!

I’ve made this recipe many times over the last several years and have some tested suggestion for maximum greenness. Literally: for best deep green color that feels nourishing just to look at, use 1 bunch of dark lacinato kale (also called Tuscan or dinosaur kale), and 1 bunch green chard if you can find it, or rainbow chard if your grocery stores are like mine. Avoid the red chard as it will muddy the color, and the lighter curly green kale which will thin it.

Other tips:
- to quote a friend, I could eat cilantro by the handful, but for this particular soup I find substituting it for parsley creates the flavor profile I’m after
- I add a generous dusting of cayenne pepper to the onions as they caramelize, as I like this with a leettle bit of heat
- I use two BIG cloves garlic or three if they’re small, for similar reasons
- don’t skip the lemon juice at the end! essential for brightening
- I’m sure drizzling with nice olive oil is lovely, but generally I just accompany it with a thick toasted slice of oily focaccia bread

I don’t know if you have considered this but stop smoking in areas where people are forced to wait at. Don’t smoke at crosswalks. Don’t smoke outside doorways. Don’t smoke at bus stops. People with asthma or other breathing conditions or people that idk DON’T WANT TO BREATHE IN YOUR CIGARETTE SMOKE are trying to get to places and need to be able to breathe. Yeah, heres the thing, yeah I’m an addict, but that’s literally no excuse to expose others to it.

The ONLY time I smoke at a cross walk, or any other public area is when I’m alone.

If I’m near people (more specifically, friends or a group of people I’m talking with) I stand downwind, I blow my smoke, downwind, I respect other people right to not get lung cancer.

If kids are able to see me, but not close enough to get exposed to smoke, I hide that shit, I’m not trying to make kids think it’s cool.

If a kid is close enough to get exp to smoke, that shit it get put out and hidden.

If I’m out in a public place (with no one around, as stated above) guess where I put the cigarette butt when I’m done with it (and theres no butt can) in my pocket, I dont want to litter or expose animals to the toxins that are in a used cigarette butt.

If I can put forth the minimal effort to not expose people to my cancer sticks, so can every other smoker.

Dont be a dick.

(P.S. that comment about isolation, there are smoking areas for a reason, and every smoking area I’ve ever been to is a social hotspot, you aren’t alone 99% of the time. And even if you were, too fucking bad, we’re choosing to expose ourselves to cigarette smoke, dont force it onto other people, especially if you consider them your friends.)
